On March 7, 2000 Robert Morning Sky talked about the Hopi tradition of the "Great Purification."
"The final stage, called "The Great Day of Purification," has been described as a "Mystery Egg" in which the forces of the swastika and the Sun plus a third force symbolized by the color red culminate either in total rebirth or total annihilation, we don't know which. But the choice is yours--war and natural catastrophe may be involved. The degree of violence will be determined by the degree of inequity caused among the peoples of the world and in the balance of nature. In this crisis rich and poor will be forced to struggle as equals in order to survive.
"The reality that it will be very violent is now almost taken for granted among Traditional Hopi, but man still may lessen the violence by correcting his treatment of nature and fellow man. Ancient spiritually-based communities, such as the Hopi, must especially be preserved and not forced to abandon their wise way of life and the natural resources they have vowed to protect.
"The man made system now destroying the Hopi is deeply involved in similar violations throughout the world. The devastating reversal predicted is part of the natural order. If those who thrive from that system, its money and its laws can manage to stop destroying the Hopi, then many may be able to survive the Day of Purification and enter a new age of peace. But if no one is left to continue the Hopi way, the hope for such an age is in vain. "How can there be peace? Nowhere is there peace, not even within the Hopi peaceful society. Every nation on earth, from people in high places down to the lowest cast, are not at peace. How can peace be accomplished when weapons are made to kill? How can there be peace if people hate, not love? Perhaps the only alternative is now Purification.
"Since mankind has lost peace with one another through the conflict because of the new ways, the Great Spirit, and the Great Creator has punished the people in many ways. Through all of this there was always a small group who survived to keep the original ways of life alive. This small group are those who adhere to the laws of the Creator, who keep the spiritual path open, out from the circle of evil. According to our knowledge we are not quite out of the circle.
"The men with ambitious minds will decrease, while the people of good hearts, who live in harmony with the earth, will increase until the earth is rid of evil. If the Hopi are right this will be accomplished and the earth will bloom again. The spiritual door is open, why not join the righteous people."
THE PURIFICATION
The famous Hopi Prophecy Rock clearly depicts two paths:
* A "two-hearted path," with three individuals upon it. A two-hearted person is one who thinks with his head rather than his heart. Modern Man is out of balance because he lives in a left brain dominated society, leading to imbalance and conflict, and ultimately to the destruction of those on it.
* A "one-hearted path," or one that is in balance and harmony with the universe.
The Rock prophecy shows a conjunction where the two-hearted people have a choice of choosing to start thinking with their hearts or continue to thin with their heads only. If they choose the latter, it will lead to self-destruction, symbolized by the lightening strike from a cloud. If people chose to think with their hearts, they will return to the one-hearted path and their own survival.
The Rock shows three half-circles that represent three world-shakings, as the Source strives to remind us of how we are all related. The first shaking occurs when man tosses bugs into the air (airplanes, first used in World War I). The second world-shaking occurs when man uses the Hopi migration symbol in war (swastika adopted by Hitler in World War II). The third shaking will be recognized by a red cover or cloak, which could point to Communist China. Hopi prophecy also says that the signs of the third shaking willbe:
- The trees die (acid rain or destruction of the rainforest)
- Man builds a house in the sky (space stations)
- Cold places become hot, and hot places will become cold (erratic weather)
- Lands sink into the ocean, and lands will raise out of the sea
- The blue Star Kachina appears
Only by undergoing the Hopi process of Purification can we set foot on the Return Path to the One-hearted Path, and just hope that we haven't gone past that point. Purification involves a number of elements:
1. Repentance, or rethinking, of the Two-hearted Way of Life. This involves commitment, deep knowing that we are all One, acceptance of personal power to create change, and following our inner guidance. It is good to do this in groups, because it reminds us that the who is greater than the sum of the parts. Also, as individuals, we are so rooted in our Two-hearted ways that we need others to help point them out to us. Once we as a group have identified and committed to a One-hearted vision, we can begin to live it, first within the group, then increasingly in the outer Two-hearted world. Then like-minded groups may join together to form "villages," ready for when the Two-hearted Path Collapses in ruins.
2. Sovereignty, or self-respect, and respect for the sovereignty of others. It is also about taking responsibility for our creations and good stewardship for whatever is in our sphere of influence. For example, the Fifth World view of the planet is as a partner to be nurtured rather than a resource to be consumed and discarded. Also, wealth and abundance will not be hoarded by those whose lands produce it, but will be shared equitably. Finally, any decision about stewardship will never by short-term but will consider the impact on future generations.
3. Truthfulness. Confusion over "what should be" versus "what is" separates us from the realities of life. We look for quick fixes, Hollywood endings and the latest fads rather than "walking the talk" and "doing the work." One group may import "whatever works" from another group and impose it on themselves, but disharmony may result. This leads to strife, conflict, and even war. Other cultures become too complex and collapse under their own weight, thrusting the people into anarchy until new ways are found. This is the inevitable outcome of the Two-hearted Path, and we are seeing its effects now as fewer and fewer Americans believe that government is "by the people for the people." Our lives float between hope and fear, unrooted in "what is." From the moment of our birth, we are indoctrinated into membership of our culture, with prison or asylum awaiting dissenters. We leave school, trained to become "another brick in the wall," mindlessly perpetuating the Two-hearted Path. The Hopi language has no equivalent of, "I'm busy," or "I'm sorry." Busy-ness and apology are not part of the One-hearted Path; and will not carry us through the collapse of the Fourth World and the emergence into the Fifth.

My friend, Blue Thunder, Teacher from among the Eastern Shoshone people, sent me this significant message from Grayeagle from the Yukon Territory of Canada. Because it appears to refer to the return of the Star Nations, among other important predictions, I deemed it important to share.

Saugh-he, a sign of purification has been sent to the people, that the Morning Star will start to be seen right before the night and light dances together. This is clear to the people of understanding and balance. This message of purification from Creator is speaking that end times are near, as people know it.
In the days that follow, people will look at the sky nation and witness and feel the return of two brothers that helped create Earth Mother in the birthing time.
One brother who has the care of the top of Earth Mother and his Brother who has the care for the bottom of Earth Mother. In these days the Morning Star will come and be with the two brothers and they will start to return Earth Mother to her natural rotation.
This has been shown for ages in many Petroglyphs within the Mayan and Egyptian pyramids and the carving and inscription on many rocks and bones.
Earth Mother has been manipulated and characterized throughout the ages by people that are not so suggestive of doing good for Earth Mother and Creators creations.
The two brothers will work and walk with the Hothooka. The Hothooka Caunotka as my ancestors spoke of them, will dance with the wind and find the ones that remember the original teachings of the old ways. The Hothooka Caunotka walks strong with Earth Mother's purification dance.
The return of the Morning Star and Hothooka Caunotka, is a message to all that a new day and new way of life on Earth Mother is here and the purification has started.
Some changes will begin when the feeling of fire burn within the people. Their fires will burn with desires and conflicts if they don't remember the original old ways of teachings.
With this time of purification on Earth Mother, all life as humans have known will be changed. There will be messages and messengers that will precede the Morning Star dance. People will disappear, for they were only hollow vessels for the darkness to use. Things will be so dark and out of balance in the cities, that many will choose to leave.
Only those who return to the values of the teachings of the old ways will be able to find peace of mind and balance during this purification.
It will be a hard time for people with children; they will be avoided deliberately and in some manner treated with force. Many of the children in these times will act and be un-natural. Some will be from the star nation. Some from past worlds, some will be created by people, in an un-natural manner and will have no soul.
Many of people in this time will be empty in faith, they will have no life force in their eyes or balance or their actions.
As the time gets closer to the purification, there will be those who walk as ghosts through the cities and canyons they have constructed in their self-made mountains.
Those that walk through these places will be very heavy in their walk; it will appear almost painful as they take each step. These are disconnected souls from their faith, Creator and Earth Mother's understanding.
After the arrival of the Hothooka Caunotka, they will begin to vanish before your eyes like smoke from the coals of a fire. Others will have great deformities, both in the mind and on their bodies; because the fake gateways that protected these people will be opened, there will be much confusion between sexes and children and the adults.
Life will get and be very perverted and there will be little social order in these times. Many will ask for their misery to end and still others will appear as if untouched by what is occurring. The ones who remember the old ways of teachings and reconnected their souls and faith are those who remember who their mother and father are.
The Hothooka Caunotka will show people many signs in the sky nation. In this way people will know that Creator is not a dream. Even the people who do not feel their connection to faith will see the faces of the Grandfather across the sky nation.
Many things will begin to occur with people that will not make sense, for reality will be shifting in and out of their dream time. There will be many paths to the lower world that will open at this time. Things long forgotten will come back to remind people of the past creations. All living and forgotten things want to be present for the great day of purification when the forever cycle of Earth Mother starts.
The People will receive many warnings allowing them to change their paths from below the Earth Mother as well as above. Then one morning in a moment, the purification will awaken. Many things will then begin to happen that people want to be sure of their exact nature; for much of what reality was, will not be seen in the now, it will be gone.

AB: Good morning, everybody. I'm Art Bell and if we get our phones hooked up right, and we've just had a disconnect problem, we are going to, in this half hour, have two Hopi Elders on the program. We've never tried this before. . . . First, we are going to go to Robert Ghost Wolf, who is out somewhere in the Dakotas. Where ARE you, Robert?
GW: I'm in the Black Hills. South Dakota. . . .
AB: . . . we are about to hear two Hopi Elders. We are not going to give their real names on the air. We are going to call them "Grandfather 1", "Grandfather 2", and "Grandmother Hopi." Why are we doing this?
GW: There has already been a lot of controversy about these Elders stepping out and speaking like this, to the world, and they have had some threats made against them already, so we are taking precautions to make sure that they're safe.

AB: Ok. I think that my first question?. . . I would like to ask Grandfather 1 why he has come forward in public at this time?
GF2: {Asks GF1 in Hopi language, then translates.}
GF1: {Answers in Hopi language.} It is our time to bring forth the message into the world. It has been taught to us by our Elders, from way back. That is why I have chosen to step forward and bring out the message today. There are people out there who are leading two lives?..who are there to stop us from putting forth the message, but it is the Elders, that taught us the wisdom, that are telling us to do this now for you and the rest of the world.
AB: With regard to what may be changing, Earth changes, is the time now very short?
GF2: {Asks, then translates.} It is time for the end times here, that was prophesized and through the dreams that were given to us also. Through those dreams, we are learning that we are getting very close to the end times.
AB: Might we ask how old Grandfather 1 is? His age?
GF2: {Asks?} Seventy-five. 75 years old. . . . From the time when (?) was the chief,
he had been carrying this message. But mainly the message had been carried forth by word of mouth. The accuracy had to deal with how well each individual that was given the opportunity to maintain the exactness of the prophecies. They were all given this prophecy, so they all had to meet at least once or twice a year, in the Kivas, where they would actually sit down and go back through that. One person would talk about the prophecies, and if he ever so much as added something to it or left something out, then the rest of the group would know that part of the prophecies was missing. So, they would tell him, "Well, you didn't say this one here," or "You added this to it." So, that is how this was kept alive through word of mouth and everyone had to remember just what those prophecies were about.
AB: Is Grandfather, or are you and others now having many dreams indicating that indeed these are the end times beginning to unfold?
GF2: {Asks?} Yes, I have dreamed about these things and that's how a lot of them are coming about and they are true. . . . It wasn't exactly through the dreams. The dreams were part of the teachings that he knows and having to understand the exactness of the prophecies themselves. He had to go out and do a lot of prayers. And then, he would go and do this and was doing this for a whole year. Within a year's time, he had kind of lost interest in the giving of the prophecies to him, because he hadn't received anything. So, he decided to quit for awhile. Finally, within a few months, he decided to go back to his prayers and he would go out and pray. Within four year's time, he started receiving a lot of information. So, that is how most of his information was received?..through asking?..prayer.

AB: . . . any details of what is going to happen, here on
Earth, with this prophecy. What is coming? Any specific details at all?

G2: Actually, there are a few that he thinks are important things that will be coming up pretty shortly. There's one thing for sure that we are going to come upon is that World War III is....it will take place....and starvation is definitely a part of this thing, where we will hit starvation. The weather change, itself, it's erratic, right now, and it's not what it should be. This weather climate, itself, it's actually taking care of the crops already in a way that we're losing it. That's part of...you know.....leading us into starvation because the crops will not produce.
GW: Do they know that you were just able to plant the corn up in Hopi land? Just a few days ago, like a week or so ago because of the weather?
G2: Yes. People have just started to do those things and it comes up but the winds are drying them up and the weather has been erratic, like I said, and it's been very cold. It's been...you know, actually....they get frost bitten. It's kind of like a frost bitten effect on it that it burns it up.
AB: Yes. Yes, we are having the same thing here in Nevada. A kind of a frost bite.

G2: Yes, these are the signs of, you know, the changes and that also part of it is, you know, right now we're having problems with crickets which is a part of these prophecies where they would come in hoards and they will destroy the crops, also, and that is happening, also.
GW: You're having that in Nevada, aren't you?
AB: Yes, we are. In Southern Nevada we are having that and, apparently, throughout large portions of the Southwest we are having that.....yes, indeed. . . .
AB: When does Grandfather think the very serious parts of the prophecies, another world war and mass starvation......when will these begin to manifest? How far away from these are we?

G2: Well, it's been said that there is no exact time and date for these things.....events....to take place but the year 2000 is a ......I would say.....that is a close approximation of the time that all of this will start to take place. The teaching from the Elders was that they talked about that everything will happen at once but, when they say these things, they put it in a form that, you know, they say it's going to all happen at once but it's not exactness of happening at once. It will happen but they will, you know, fall pretty much short from the other, following, it's like a domino effect. This is, you know, when one thing happens then the other will fall into place.

G2: Ah, yes. The Earth changes will take place in such a way, you know, that this whole planet, here, will become a different type of planet because of the changes in itself. It has happened before, as we mentioned earlier, that it did happen before that they went through these changes and they was taught they we weren't supposed to go back to the same routine that we had gone through in the past life. That was the corruption that we were going through....what we're going through, today. There is so much corruption, out there. These were the things that led us to these things and even animals,
insects, all of these things will all turn around on us and, you know, they're going to lead us to the same things again.

AB: The animals will turn against us. Already, I have talked to many experts.....animal experts....who are saying that animal attacks, all across North America, are increasing many, many fold. So, this could be the beginning of that. . . . Grandfather 1, the question was, all of these changes including a world war?..uh, will there be a different effect in the cities than there is in the country?

GF2: {Asks GF1?} Yes, in the big cities, it will effect a lot. You know, how much corruption there will be within the cities. Also, the people themselves have to be aware of all of these things that will take place, so they must change, too. But, he's not asking anyone to follow him in the way he put himself on the path he is on. He is not asking anyone to follow him in that. It is up to the individual to make that decision for him/herself as to which direction they want to go. When you make that choice for yourself, what you want to do with your life, you don't blame anybody else for your own actions, for what you do. If something happens to you along the way, then you are not going to say that you were forced into it. These are the things that he had looked into also. That's why he's saying that he's not asking anyone to follow him in the way he's leading himself. He's only giving out advice that this is what they should do. They should start changing themselves and going back to the old ways of living simple lives, of taking care of themselves from the land that is available to them, and from the food that they grow. These are the things that will help you along the way when you come to your hard times. So, the people must make these decisions for themselves.
AB: All right. There are many that I have interviewed, many others who see the future, who say that our Sun is beginning to change and that it is causing some of these changes here on Earth. Does Grandfather know anything about that?
GF2: {Asks?} From these teachings that were given to him, he has understood that the solar axis itself, of the Sun, is going to change. The places that normally have cold weather will have hot weather. You know, the weather itself is going to get even worse. The temperatures are going to rise even higher, and that will burn up
the crops and dry up the Earth, so nothing will be able to grow. It is true that the Sun itself is being affected by this also.
AB: In farmer's fields around the world, in many, many places in the world,?..as a matter of fact even tonight, for the first time ever in the state of Virginia, there is a very complex crop circle. These are strange formations in farmer's crops. Does Grandfather know anything about what these may be, and why they happen?
GF2: {Asks?} He has heard about these. He has seen pictures of the crop circles that have been out there. These are, in his own mind, teachings also, and they're telling us what is becoming of our time and where it is leading us. He has had a chance to look at a few of them, and he does understand what they're trying to put through?..the message in the circle itself. It is telling us that we are very close to it and what we need to do in order to get ourselves back on track, and the other end of it?..when he says, the other end of it, where you get to see all the things happen and live again?..for a new life to start.
AB: Ok. Uh, then this is a good question. We have many strange machines that fly in our sky that we call UFOs. What do the Hopi have to say regarding these kinds of things, that have been seen to fly in the sky, what the Hopi may have called, "Star Brothers who have come from the heavens?"
GF2: {Asks?} I'd like to add a little to what he just said. This is referring to the question prior to this one. I didn't finish it out. He said that the crop circles were put there by outside, like the UFO people, but he's not sure just who put those crop circles there. But, to get back to the question that is the last one here, the teachings from the Elders, he said, yes they know about the possibilities of other life forms on other planets. The "Old Ones," the old people, the "Old Ones" way back had the knowledge and know-how of getting around, and they have traveled to other planets before and they know how it is out there, if there is life on other planets and they DO know that there is life on other planets and what planets are not liveable. But, they don't know the exactness of how they will be helping us out or they will be going against us. They just know that when we are getting close to the end times, we will be visited by people from out there, and we're not aware whether they're going to help us or go against us. We do know that they have high technology to see what is going on.

AB: I understand. Maybe I could ask this. What is the 'Purifier'? Is the 'Purifier', is it the Hopi Prophecy or is the 'Purifier' something specific? Is it a comet or is it something from the heavens or how may we know what the 'Purifier' is?

G2: The story about that is that we do know that we did have a brother who was set out and he is out there and with that brother and, from the Society of the One Horned Clan, they made a pact that .... from the One Horned Clan and the Society and the brother had make like a.....it's a law that the purifying time would come. This was already done, it was like it had been already organized and it was, you know, established.
GW: Like a contract.
G2: The stories that there will be come a time that whoever is going to come and, you know, to purify the people.....
G2: The 'Purifier' is mentioned is the other brother that was sent forth, out to the East, and this was the teaching that he had.....that he was sent of to the East and he would reach the point of origin where the Sun would come out from. When he reached that place, then he would touch his head to the Earth and he would return back to us. When this, you know, time comes that's the end of....the end times....time for a purification time when he will return back. He is the one that has the....in a way, you know....the weapons or the artillery and he is the Big Brother so he would know what to do and how he would help us and how we would go about in having to make us understand. His job is to make us understand and try to get ourselves to behave in the way that we're supposed to and, if we don't, then the one from the West will come and they are the ones that are going to come with much force. He, the 'Purifier', the one that went to the East, is supposed to be big enough to take on the ones that are coming from the West. That is going to become like the Third World War.
AB: T. . . Does Grandfather have any idea why these things seem to be happening in our society?

G2: Well, the outcome of this, after that purifying time, the lifestyle will change....more or less. Those people or those ones that have been working, you know, with the evil or and the dark side are going to be eliminated. Only those that are walking on the one path and believing in that one and with a good heart, those are the ones that are going to continue this and there will be some....what you would say....there might be some people who have the minds that are like the scientists that can develop things. Right now we are not supposed to be taking the minerals out of the Earth for any reason at all, you know. Only certain minerals but only for the amount that you need, that's what was taught. But other than that, we're not supposed to reap the Earth,
you know, and tear it up like that...what we're doing now. Like intermarriage, it's not supposed to be done. Only after purification time will intermarriage be possible, you know, that we can start to marry other people.....other walks. This is, you know, when the people will come together after purification time and all walks, that have been spared, will come together and one language will be spoken. There will be one law and it has been taught to say that, you know, some people say that it's gonna be their language or it's going to be the Hopi language that's going to be spoken but this is, you know, something that is not very known as to what language will be spoken but there will be one language that will be spoken. Togetherness is what will come about where we're going to come back to what was once before. What Adam and Eve came upon was, you know, was the Garden of Eden where everything will be flourishing, even, you know, the flowers and the vegetation. Everything will be back to normal but from thenceforth we are allowed to do these things and we can take the minerals out of the Earth, to use for a purpose, and not to really destroy it, though.

G2: . . . Hopi has been know that they would strive and survive, even in a desert place where there is no water really available for those kinds of things. So, they ask, through prayer, to ask their crops to survive and this is a strong sense of spirituality of the Hopi.
AB: And it is to these kachinas that you pray?
G2: Yes. They come in the form of clouds.
AB: Would you ask Grandfather, this. Earlier we asked him about the Sun and he said the Sun would shift on it's axis. There are many who think these Earth changes that are so imminent, now.....so soon.....will mean that the Earth will also change on it's axis in response to what the Sun does. Now, the question is, is there anything in Hopi prophecy about changes in the pattern of the stars because that is what we would see after an axis change here on Earth? Would the stars look different?

G2: Yes, he believes that the axis of the Earth itself will change, also.....shift....and that will cause a lot of Earth changes, itself, also. About the stars that you mentioned, there have been a lot of stories about these things and they pertain to a lot of what happened with the stars, too. He says he doesn't know exactly but it's true that a lot of what happened with the stars and different things .... the patterns ..... are true and now they talk about these things as just like stories and like fairy tale stores but most of them are true. He doesn't know exactly what will take place out there, again, if that should every happen.
AB: Alright. Would you ask Grandfather to give us some few things that we should all watch and look for to happen in the next say.....18 months.....or year and a half.

G2: Okay, he says that these earthquakes are eminent but there is no real date as to when these will take place. That big earthquake that was supposed to hit California had been altered, in a way, by the Tibetans who had heard about that and they did a lot of prayers there and they helped in altering the intensity of the earthquake that took place in California. That is, you know, something that we should look for is a large earthquake that would take place. It's going to be real big. It's going to be devastating.

AB: T. . . Does Grandfather have any idea why these things seem to be happening in our society?

G2: Well, the outcome of this, after that purifying time, the lifestyle will change....more or less. Those people or those ones that have been working, you know, with the evil or and the dark side are going to be eliminated. Only those that are walking on the one path and believing in that one and with a good heart, those are the ones that are going to continue this and there will be some....what you would say....there might be some people who have the minds that are like the scientists that can develop things. Right now we are not supposed to be taking the minerals out of the Earth for any reason at all, you know. Only certain minerals but only for the amount that you need, that's what was taught. But other than that, we're not supposed to reap the Earth,
you know, and tear it up like that...what we're doing now. Like intermarriage, it's not supposed to be done. Only after purification time will intermarriage be possible, you know, that we can start to marry other people.....other walks. This is, you know, when the people will come together after purification time and all walks, that have been spared, will come together and one language will be spoken. There will be one law and it has been taught to say that, you know, some people say that it's gonna be their language or it's going to be the Hopi language that's going to be spoken but this is, you know, something that is not very known as to what language will be spoken but there will be one language that will be spoken. Togetherness is what will come about where we're going to come back to what was once before. What Adam and Eve came upon was, you know, was the Garden of Eden where everything will be flourishing, even, you know, the flowers and the vegetation. Everything will be back to normal but from thenceforth we are allowed to do these things and we can take the minerals out of the Earth, to use for a purpose, and not to really destroy it, though.

G2: . . . Hopi has been know that they would strive and survive, even in a desert place where there is no water really available for those kinds of things. So, they ask, through prayer, to ask their crops to survive and this is a strong sense of spirituality of the Hopi.
AB: And it is to these kachinas that you pray?
G2: Yes. They come in the form of clouds.
AB: Would you ask Grandfather, this. Earlier we asked him about the Sun and he said the Sun would shift on it's axis. There are many who think these Earth changes that are so imminent, now.....so soon.....will mean that the Earth will also change on it's axis in response to what the Sun does. Now, the question is, is there anything in Hopi prophecy about changes in the pattern of the stars because that is what we would see after an axis change here on Earth? Would the stars look different?

G2: Yes, he believes that the axis of the Earth itself will change, also.....shift....and that will cause a lot of Earth changes, itself, also. About the stars that you mentioned, there have been a lot of stories about these things and they pertain to a lot of what happened with the stars, too. He says he doesn't know exactly but it's true that a lot of what happened with the stars and different things .... the patterns ..... are true and now they talk about these things as just like stories and like fairy tale stores but most of them are true. He doesn't know exactly what will take place out there, again, if that should every happen.
AB: Alright. Would you ask Grandfather to give us some few things that we should all watch and look for to happen in the next say.....18 months.....or year and a half.

G2: Okay, he says that these earthquakes are eminent but there is no real date as to when these will take place. That big earthquake that was supposed to hit California had been altered, in a way, by the Tibetans who had heard about that and they did a lot of prayers there and they helped in altering the intensity of the earthquake that took place in California. That is, you know, something that we should look for is a large earthquake that would take place. It's going to be real big. It's going to be devastating.

THE HOPI PROPHECY

Ancient knowledge of the Path of Life was drawn on one of the rocks near Oraibi, one of the two oldest continuously inhabited villages in the Western Hemisphere
"Meditate, fast, pray, walk through the earth, look at animals, look at the sky, think about these things, nature, and you're going to be filling yourself with spiritual power and you will have better respect for one another. "
Thomas Banyacya is an interpreter for the spiritual leaders of the Hopi Nation. Their whole spiritual life is based on seeing to it that living things are not interfered with: "We are all related; we are all one with nature. At this very moment we are all linked together by the air that we breathe. Hopi believe that everything is alive. Hopi believe that we must, from our heart, give that spiritual feeling to others so that nature will continue on its natural course. "
Thomas Banyacya went to a government-sponsored college: "I was forced to learn to do things, so I teamed many Bible verses and had a chance to look into many world religious books. In the written books I found the same things that I had learned from my elders when I was growing up, so after I finished two years [1930-32] of college in Oklahoma, I went back home and met with my elders in their sacred kivas to learn. In 1948 they started revealing the ancient knowledge for the first time. At the end of the four days they wanted someone to bring this message to the world for them, to write letters for them, and to be an ear and tongue for them, so they appointed some of us to be their interpreters."
The Hopi religious leaders also instructed their people to search for their native American brothers, so Thomas Banyacya met with Mad Bear and Beeman Logon, a chief from the Seneca Tonawanda reservation. They were surprised to find that the ancient knowledge and drawings of the Hopi and the Iroquois were very similar even though they had never had contact before. They traveled around the country, holding spiritual meetings to help reestablish the traditional religious principles that "are now being broken down by pressure from the Bureau of Indian Affairs' programs across the land. In some places the people have completely lost their songs and languages, and they don't know where they belong. So I spent a week with them, camping out, and going through the ceremonies. Twenty years later, these men are now coming out proud and strong. They see where they belong, learn their languages and songs to become active in their religions so that this land will not be totally destroyed again."
Fifteen to twenty native Americans traveled from as far away as Washington state to attend the Temple of Understanding's Spiritual Summit Conference V at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and the United Nations in New York City in October. Thomas Banyacya spoke about the Hopi prophecy as it applies to the Hopi, other native Americans, and "all brothers and sisters" throughout the world in the past, present, and future.

Hopi prophecy is the spiritual side of our lives, our knowledge of things pertaining to the land, Mother Earth, and to the sun, moon, and stars as the elements that help to keep nature in balance. Hopi knew that there was a life before this one and even one before that one. Both were destroyed--the last one by a great flood--because mankind had gone too far away from love, nature, and the Great Spirit's plan of life. He went on inventing things, became corrupt, and destroyed himself. There are always a few who hold on to the spiritual instructions, and through their faith and courage a few people are able to survive. This is how we came to this land and the third world we're in now.
The symbol [see] stands for the Great Spirit, whom we call Massau'u; surprisingly, in the Bible he is called the Messiah. He's a spirit who comes to you in some form. He came to us as a man in the beginning of this new life, and the people gathered before him and he told us how to live on this new land. He laid down the spiritual path for us and told us what will happen. He gave us the symbol of a serpent, a very sacred symbol, and said that as long as we follow this path. there will be no end to life, and everything else was laid on this path of the rectangle.
We met him again and he said, "In order that this life will never be destroyed like the other ones, I will appoint three nations that will have the power to develop and invent things, to become strong and powerful." Their duty will be to watch other races of mankind to see if they follow religious instructions and do things the way the Great Spirit told them. And if we do things contrary to the Great Spirit, it will be their duty to shake us up and warn us. Our skin is the color of the great Mother Earth. We were given the duty to take care of the North American continent so that this life will go on and on in a natural way with everything in balance. We do not want to disturb things so much. We let animal life have its way, plant life have its way, rivers run freely. We use them in a simple way so we do not disturb them in any way.
Another group of religious leaders was given two stone tablets with all the knowledge within. Two brothers who had this same knowledge separated. A set of stone tablets was given to the older brother, who was told to go in the eastern direction to another land to develop, record, and invent things. It was told that someday he will come back and look for his younger brother, who is still holding on to his land and life in a spiritual way. The older brother, after many years, may change in color of skin. which may become white, but his hair will remain black. If the white brother has not turned completely away from his spiritual path, he will recognize and join with us, and there will not be much disturbance. The material and the spiritual will join, and we will do things in a much more spiritual way before we invent things, so we will not disturb this land so much.
But if our white brother comes and has already completely turned away from the instructions, he will change the symbol [circle] and we will know he has changed things. They warned us that when your white brother comes with another symbol ( + ), you had better watch out. He's going to have a sweet tongue; he's going to have many inventions; he's going to tell us, "Let your way go. Come follow me." This happened once already, and much life and property were destroyed. It will stop for a while and another man will come with better inventions; now we have radios, televisions, roads in the sky. People want those things and they forget about religions. Now the third one is coming, with much-improved inventions.
When our white brothers came to our homeland from across the waters, we welcomed them and did everything a brother would do for a brother who had been away for a long time. We gave you food; we let you live on our land; we even stepped out of our ____ to let you live in our home. We did everything so that you could have this kind of life.
But today we find this life has been broken down because our white brother has come with different inventions and ways of religious belief. The American government, through the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs, is supposed to be the guardian and protector of our native land, religion, and way of life, but their policy is to try and change us into something else through education, industrialization, and their programs that say they would help to bring about better conditions among our people. Even though our religious elders, because of spiritual knowledge, warnings, and instructions from the Great Spirit, do not want modern conveniences, they keep pushing them on us. We go too far, manufacturing things without spiritual understanding. Today we find great destruction in our sacred area; at Black Mesa, where strip mining is going on, huge holes are being formed. They have also been digging oil and uranium. Our underground water sources are being used so much that our sacred spring may eventually dry up. In that area we have no irrigation, but through spiritual exercises our religious leaders are able to bring rain so that there will be enough corn, melon, beans, and pumpkins provided for our families. Hopi do not want any chemical fertilizers to be brought into these areas. They are planning to put seven generator plants along the Colorado River just north of us. Each one will burn coal that is now being strip-mined. One of them is already putting out enough smog to equal that of Los Angeles and New York combined. In spite of protests, they are building housing projects right in the sacred area, where members of the sacred societies use the land as a spiritual center. They are trying to put in water and sewer lines against our wishes. All these are signs to us, to the religious leaders, that we must go east in our land, as the prophecy said, to look for the house of mica where world leaders will be gathered and present this to them, not to try to change their ways, but hoping that maybe one, two, or three nations would say, "Let's look into it." We tried it in 1959, but they would not let us speak in the United Nations.
The ninety-year-old man who called the meeting in 1948 was told by his grandfather that he might be able to see some of the inventions the white brother will be bringing: "You will see carriages pulled by animals at first, carrying people across the land. Pretty soon, they are going to run by themselves. They're going to build trails in every direction from their homes upon the land. If you go down one of these trails, you may see water in front of you." We have no word for pavement, but that's the way to describe actually seeing a mirage on a hot summer day. "Pretty soon we'll be talking to each other through cobwebs (telephone lines). We are going to close all windows and doors, but way over the mountain some of us are going to be hearing and talking (radio and TV). There will be another world-shaking event taking place: somebody will invent something. A gourd full of ashes, a small thing that's going to be so powerful, if whoever invents it ever allows it to fall on the earth someplace, it will boil rivers and oceans and burn everything to ashes. Out of it will come sickness that our medicines will not be able to cure."
Then he said, "There will be roads in the sky. If man goes to the moon and brings something back with him, we will not be able to control what will happen, because balance will be disturbed. When man starts messing around with moon and stars, look at your life. It will be similar to the way it was before the destruction of the last world: Men will not listen to each other. Men with the same language will not be able to control themselves; they will desecrate each other and assassinate high leaders. Children will not listen to their parents, and parents will neglect their children. There will be restlessness all over this land. They're going to invent more things and will start interfering with male and female. They can even invent man. If they succeed, then those people will have no mercy for anyone. They will be very cruel and destructive and we cannot control them. Animals will become bigger and stronger, more aggressive, because of all the chemicals we put in them. There will be changes in seasons and destruction by earthquake, fire, and lightning. Mountains will sink. We will know that the time has come that man has to get together when the sun will rise blood-red and will set blood-red." They could not understand this then, but I see now there will be such pollution that the sky will be dark red. We've already seen that. The Six-Nation Iroquois Confederacy prophecy said pollution will get so great that tall trees standing straight will now bend low. When you see this, the dangerous point has been reached. We will be at the end of the path that the Great Spirit has laid down for this world.
We are in the third world now, and if we straighten ourselves out, we are ready to go into the fourth world. When it looks as though everything we have invented is going to go on forever, that things are perfect, some of our own people will join the others. The figure on the top line separated from the other three represents one of our own people leaving the Hopis; the zigzag line represents man's advancement in technical, scientific knowledge.
We let the white brother go on his own path to see which one would bring a good life. We have seen mineral resources running out: oil, gas, iron. Man invented so many chemical things: highly developed nuclear power, atom bombs—we have those planted all over this land. Do you think we are going to save ourselves by doing that? If you want to have living things around you, you had better put those aside. You should stop manufacturing armaments and sending them abroad so other countries can kill themselves off, creating a situation that divides people and destroys their culture and religion. Everything is based on our spiritual foundation; once that is destroyed, there is no way you can save yourself.
The symbol [see] represents the spiritual center; to the Hopi it is the four-corner area in northern Arizona where four states come together. It is there that we have planted our sacred shrines, ruins and petroglyphs. Then we went in four directions to the edges of the land and all over the world. Now we are coming back, but we have not yet recognized one another. It is told in your history books that you came to this land for religious freedom, a good free life. But what are you doing to your brothers who are holding to this land in a simple, spiritual, and humble way? We have no guns, no army, no police, no money, no jails, or court systems, no written law. Our villages —Old Oraibi, Shongopovi, Hotevilla—are still built on a spiritual structure: they don't need these things. Each of our families is supposed to support themselves by working the fields, going through the ceremonies, and carrying on their own way of life in the villages.
We are waiting and searching for our white brother who has taken the stone tablets to a far land and is now coming back. There is a sacred shrine already prepared below Old Oraibi, where one set is kept and where the other set will be when our brother comes. There will be a password, explanation of the sacred stone tablets, and a recognition that will prove to the world that we are brothers. It will be that white brother who will say, "What have these people been doing to you?" Power will be given to three purifiers who will bring him to us at that time. We are almost there.
After many years of trying to find out who was commissioned by the Great Spirit at the very beginning to watch other people, to warn them, and finally to correct them so that this life will not be totally destroyed, the elder who called that meeting in 1948 showed me the gourd rattle [see] we still use in our sacred ceremony. When you rattle it once, they sing and dance; when you rattle it again, they stop. The gourd rattle with the symbol drawn on it represents the world. Of all the races of the world, somebody is going to show the swastika symbol and somebody is going to show the sun symbol. Those two nations were given the great sacred mission in this world, to watch other nations' people. They will become powerful and invent many things and be very strong. They are going to purify themselves first by performing their duty of warning others; they will almost destroy themselves, but out of it a new generation is going to arise, much stronger and with great purpose. There will be a third nation to rise soon, "a man with a red cap, red hat, or red cloak." He will have many people with him, become strong, and have many inventions, and will be very powerful. He belongs to no religion but his own. They will find out the spiritual leaders of this land are about to be destroyed, and are mistreated, plundered, and killed for no reason at all. Some unseen being is going to send that message to them: "Your brothers are about to be destroyed; you had better go and help them." This is what some of you refer to as flying saucers; they are watching us every day to see how far we are to destroying our spiritual people who are holding this land and life in their hands for the Great Spirit and all the children, not for any government.
We are getting close to this time of purification because all around the edges of land right up to the spiritual center of Hopi people, the land has been taken by force, by bribery. They tell our Hopi people, "I took your land a long time ago but I never paid you for it; you sue me, I'll pay you for it."
The Great Spirit says these three will arrive from the eastern direction quickly and they will take it over in one day, but if they fail in their mission, there is one who is coming slowly over a long time from the west. They will be like a million ants crawling on the western soil. When that happens, don't get on the housetops to watch, because they will have no mercy for anybody; they will be very cruel and will knock everything down.
Then, if none of these fulfill their mission in this life, the Hopi leaders will place their prayer-feathers to the four corners of the earth in an appeal to the Great Spirit. He will cause the lightning to strike the earth people. Only the righteous ones will revive. Then, if all people turned away from the Great Spirit, He will cause the great waters to cover the earth again. We, humans, shall have lost the chance to enter everlasting life. They say the ants may inhabit the earth after that.
But if the three fulfill their sacred mission and if one or two or three Hopi remain fast to the last on these ancient teachings or instructions, then the Great Spirit, Massau'u, will appear before all that will be saved and the three will lay out a new life plan which leads to everlasting life. This earth will become new as it was from the beginning. Flowers will bloom again, wild game will come home, and there will be abundance of food for all. Those who are saved will share everything equally. They will all recognize Great Spirit, and they may intermarry and may speak one tongue. A new religion will be set up if the people desire it.
This is the prophecy of the Great Spirit We cannot change it, we cannot add anything to it, we cannot stop it. We are looking. Who is our white brother who will not lie and cheat and plunder us, but really come to help that we can join as brothers and sisters, and start together a new life, a new age? I hope that some of you will understand, and that some of you will do something so that this spiritual center of ours will not be totally destroyed. [ ]

Children will not listen to their parents, and parents will neglect their children. There will be restlessness all over this land. They're going to invent more things and will start interfering with male and female. They can even invent man. If they succeed, then those people will have no mercy for anyone. They will be very cruel and destructive and we cannot control them. Animals will become bigger and stronger, more aggressive, because of all the chemicals we put in them. There will be changes in seasons and destruction by earthquake, fire, and lightning. Mountains will sink. We will know that the time has come that man has to get together when the sun will rise blood-red and will set blood-red." They could not understand this then, but I see now there will be such pollution that the sky will be dark red. We've already seen that. The Six-Nation Iroquois Confederacy prophecy said pollution will get so great that tall trees standing straight will now bend low. When you see this, the dangerous point has been reached. We will be at the end of the path that the Great Spirit has laid down for this world.
We are in the third world now, and if we straighten ourselves out, we are ready to go into the fourth world. When it looks as though everything we have invented is going to go on forever, that things are perfect, some of our own people will join the others. The figure on the top line separated from the other three represents one of our own people leaving the Hopis; the zigzag line represents man's advancement in technical, scientific knowledge.
We let the white brother go on his own path to see which one would bring a good life. We have seen mineral resources running out: oil, gas, iron. Man invented so many chemical things: highly developed nuclear power, atom bombs—we have those planted all over this land. Do you think we are going to save ourselves by doing that? If you want to have living things around you, you had better put those aside. You should stop manufacturing armaments and sending them abroad so other countries can kill themselves off, creating a situation that divides people and destroys their culture and religion. Everything is based on our spiritual foundation; once that is destroyed, there is no way you can save yourself.
The symbol [see] represents the spiritual center; to the Hopi it is the four-corner area in northern Arizona where four states come together. It is there that we have planted our sacred shrines, ruins and petroglyphs. Then we went in four directions to the edges of the land and all over the world. Now we are coming back, but we have not yet recognized one another. It is told in your history books that you came to this land for religious freedom, a good free life. But what are you doing to your brothers who are holding to this land in a simple, spiritual, and humble way? We have no guns, no army, no police, no money, no jails, or court systems, no written law. Our villages —Old Oraibi, Shongopovi, Hotevilla—are still built on a spiritual structure: they don't need these things. Each of our families is supposed to support themselves by working the fields, going through the ceremonies, and carrying on their own way of life in the villages.
We are waiting and searching for our white brother who has taken the stone tablets to a far land and is now coming back. There is a sacred shrine already prepared below Old Oraibi, where one set is kept and where the other set will be when our brother comes. There will be a password, explanation of the sacred stone tablets, and a recognition that will prove to the world that we are brothers. It will be that white brother who will say, "What have these people been doing to you?" Power will be given to three purifiers who will bring him to us at that time. We are almost there.
After many years of trying to find out who was commissioned by the Great Spirit at the very beginning to watch other people, to warn them, and finally to correct them so that this life will not be totally destroyed, the elder who called that meeting in 1948 showed me the gourd rattle [see] we still use in our sacred ceremony. When you rattle it once, they sing and dance; when you rattle it again, they stop. The gourd rattle with the symbol drawn on it represents the world. Of all the races of the world, somebody is going to show the swastika symbol and somebody is going to show the sun symbol. Those two nations were given the great sacred mission in this world, to watch other nations' people. They will become powerful and invent many things and be very strong. They are going to purify themselves first by performing their duty of warning others; they will almost destroy themselves, but out of it a new generation is going to arise, much stronger and with great purpose. There will be a third nation to rise soon, "a man with a red cap, red hat, or red cloak." He will have many people with him, become strong, and have many inventions, and will be very powerful. He belongs to no religion but his own. They will find out the spiritual leaders of this land are about to be destroyed, and are mistreated, plundered, and killed for no reason at all. Some unseen being is going to send that message to them: "Your brothers are about to be destroyed; you had better go and help them." This is what some of you refer to as flying saucers; they are watching us every day to see how far we are to destroying our spiritual people who are holding this land and life in their hands for the Great Spirit and all the children, not for any government.
We are getting close to this time of purification because all around the edges of land right up to the spiritual center of Hopi people, the land has been taken by force, by bribery. They tell our Hopi people, "I took your land a long time ago but I never paid you for it; you sue me, I'll pay you for it."
The Great Spirit says these three will arrive from the eastern direction quickly and they will take it over in one day, but if they fail in their mission, there is one who is coming slowly over a long time from the west. They will be like a million ants crawling on the western soil. When that happens, don't get on the housetops to watch, because they will have no mercy for anybody; they will be very cruel and will knock everything down.
Then, if none of these fulfill their mission in this life, the Hopi leaders will place their prayer-feathers to the four corners of the earth in an appeal to the Great Spirit. He will cause the lightning to strike the earth people. Only the righteous ones will revive. Then, if all people turned away from the Great Spirit, He will cause the great waters to cover the earth again. We, humans, shall have lost the chance to enter everlasting life. They say the ants may inhabit the earth after that.
But if the three fulfill their sacred mission and if one or two or three Hopi remain fast to the last on these ancient teachings or instructions, then the Great Spirit, Massau'u, will appear before all that will be saved and the three will lay out a new life plan which leads to everlasting life. This earth will become new as it was from the beginning. Flowers will bloom again, wild game will come home, and there will be abundance of food for all. Those who are saved will share everything equally. They will all recognize Great Spirit, and they may intermarry and may speak one tongue. A new religion will be set up if the people desire it.
This is the prophecy of the Great Spirit We cannot change it, we cannot add anything to it, we cannot stop it. We are looking. Who is our white brother who will not lie and cheat and plunder us, but really come to help that we can join as brothers and sisters, and start together a new life, a new age? I hope that some of you will understand, and that some of you will do something so that this spiritual center of ours will not be totally destroyed. [ ]

Bob Frissel, in his book, "Something In This Book is True…" (Frog Ltd.; Berkeley, California; 1997) relates a story told by Reverend David Young about an encounter in the 1950's.
While driving through a desert in the Southwest, Rev. Young picked up a remarkable Hopi Elder and soon the two began a long conversation about spiritual matters.
"'I am White Feather, a Hopi of the ancient Bear Clan. In my long life I have traveled through this land, seeking out my brothers, and learning from them many things filled with wisdom. I have followed the sacred paths of my people, who inhabit the forests and many lakes in the east, the land of ice and long nights in the north, and the places of holy altars of stone built many years ago by my brothers' fathers in the south. From all these I have heard the stories of the past, and the prophecies of the future. Today, many of the prophecies have turned to stories, and few are left -- the past grows longer, and the future grows shorter.
"'And now White Feather is dying. His sons have all joined his ancestors, and soon he too shall be with them. But there is no one left, no one to recite and pass on the ancient wisdom. My people have tired of the old ways -- the great ceremonies that tell of our origins, of our emergence into the Fourth World, are almost all abandoned, forgotten, yet even this has been foretold.
The time grows short.
"'My people await Pahana, the lost White Brother [from the stars], as do all our brothers in the land. He will not be like the white men we know now, who are cruel and greedy. We were told of their coming long ago. But still we await Pahana.
"'He will bring with him the symbols, and the missing piece of that sacred tablet now kept by the elders, given to him when he left, that shall identify him as our True White Brother.
